An ice fishing trap, also called a tip-up, is made up of sticks made of plastic, wood, or other composite materials that cross over the ice hole. Its crossover design allows one of the sticks to stand vertically into the water. The vertical stick is suspended a foot from the bottom of the lake or just over the top of the weeds. A bait and a reel or spool are attached to its end.
A standard tip-up consists of two sticks made of plastic or wood that form an X. It has a trigger device at the end of the stick connected to the spool. A flag springs into the air to signal a catch. It is attached to the spring on top of the vertical stick.
An underwater style ice fishing trap uses a large reel that can hold hundreds of yards of fishing line. It features a coil-spring loaded flag and an adjustable reel drag system. It is ideal for thick ice and deep snow conditions.
Choosing Ice Fishing Traps (Buying Tips)
Flag: Look for an ice fishing trap that uses a windproof flag in a fluorescent color for high visibility.
Shape: Choose a circular fishing trap that fits right over the fishing hole to reduce its chances of freezing over.
