Guide to Lacrosse Heads

Lacrosse Head : What is it?

lacrossehead1

Lacrosse heads hold the net pockets in lacrosse sticks. They are usually made of wood, metal, or plastic, with holes along the sides for stringing net or shelf onto the frame. They have slightly rounded tops and tapered bottoms, which attach to the lacrosse shat to form the stick. Two or more panels run across the frame to serve as supports for the net when holding the lacrosse ball. Some lacrosse heads come already strung with nets, while some are sold as bare frames.

Kinds of Lacrosse heads include the following:

Standard lacrosse heads

Standard lacrosse heads have a wide scoop and narrow base. They are used for general passing and catching, allowing moderate ball control in all player positions. They come in different sidewall depths, depending on the player's preferences.

Arrowhead lacrosse heads

Arrowhead lacrosse heads are similar to standard heads, except for a small widened area near the top. This creates a wider pocket for catching and ground pickups. It also allows the player to stop the ball from the edge for more precise throwing and passing.

Goalie lacrosse heads

Goalie lacrosse heads have straight, slanted sides tapering more narrowly at the bottom. The sides converge at the base and form an open throat for attaching to the lacrosse stick. They provide a wider pocket area for receiving and deflecting balls.

Choosing Lacrosse Heads (Buying Tips)

Stringing holes: Choose a lacrosse head with many stringing holes to allow you to try different stringing styles. Make sure the holes will hold most types of netting and are evenly spaced. Look for one with a simple stringing pattern, so that you can string the head on your won.

Sidewall depth: Choose a lacrosse head with moderately curved sidewalls to allow easy passes and catches while keeping the ball safely in the net. Try a number of sidewall depths at the shop with a standard ball and see which one feels best.
