Guide to Lacrosse Shafts

Lacrosse Shaft : What is it?

lacrosseshaft1

Lacrosse shafts range from 30 to 60 inches long and come in standard, reduced, or increased diameters. The National College Athletic Association (NCAA) sets a maximum diameter of three and a half inches for official lacrosse shafts. Earlier shafts were made of wood, but most modern shafts use graphite or a variety of metals.

Kinds of Lacrosse Shafts include the following:

Graphite lacrosse shafts

Graphite shafts are made of carbon-composite graphite, usually coated with a rubberized finish for better grip. They are lighter and stronger than metal shafts, but are also more expensive.

Aluminum lacrosse shafts

Aluminum shafts commonly use a mix of aluminum and a reinforcing material, such as steel or titanium. They are heavier and bend more easily than graphite shafts.

Steel lacrosse shafts

Steel lacrosse shafts are heavier than graphite and aluminum shafts. They can also be reinforced with titanium or carbon fiber for better durability.

Titanium lacrosse shafts

Titanium shafts are the lightest and strongest type available. They are rustproof and highly resistant to impact, which makes them last longer than other shaft materials.

Choosing Lacrosse Shafts (Buying Tips)

Weight: Choose a lightweight lacrosse shaft that you can easily carry and swing throughout the game. A heavy lacrosse shaft can be uncomfortable and slow you down. Also consider the weight of your lacrosse head – your shaft and head must be proportional in weight. Make sure, however, that the shaft remains rigid and durable despite the reduced weight.

Length:
Choose a lacrosse shaft in the right length for your body size. Generally, larger players will be more comfortable with longer shafts. The shaft must also be right for your skill level and type of play. Beginners should start with a shorter staff for easier ball control, and move on to longer shafts as they improve at handling.
