Guide to Lacrosse Sticks

Lacrosse Stick : What is it?

LacrosseSticks1

A lacrosse stick is a sport equipment used in the game of lacrosse.  It consists of two parts, the head and the handle, which are usually purchased separately.  The head where a pouch is located is the part used by the lacrosse player to catch, throw, and cradle the ball.  It can come as a plastic or a traditional wood head. Its size depends on the requirements for men and women, and the different lacrosse organizations such as the International Lacrosse Federation (ILF), the US Lacrosse, and the NCAA.  The lacrosse handle, also called a shaft, is a hollow polygonal tube usually made of aluminum, titanium, or Kevlar. The exposed end called the butt is covered with tape or plug made of rubber.

Women’s lacrosse sticks are shorter than the men’s at 35.5 to 43.25 inches long. Men's lacrosse sticks are 40 to 42 inches long including the head. The offensive players use shorter sticks than the defense players who use sticks 52 to 72 inches in length. The type of lacrosse stick used in a game depends on the position of the player, skill level, and gender.

Choosing Lacrosse Sticks (Buying Tips)

Handle: Choose a lacrosse stick with a heavy and thicker handle if you are a defenseman, and a lighter and rounder handle if you are an attacking player for better maneuverability and faking.  If you want a better feel, choose one with a square shaped handle. Choosing the right lacrosse handle is a matter of preference, so  get one that would work to your advantage.

Pocket: Choose a lacrosse stick with a deeper pocket if you want more control, and a shallower pocket if you want easier release.  If you want to reduce ball rebounds, get a lacrosse stick with a pocket made of mesh netting. It also requires lesser maintenance than a leather pocket.

Stick length
:  Choose a lacrosse stick with a length that follows the rules of the organization you are playing for, your position, your gender, or your preference.
