Nunchaku, also called nunchucks, are martial arts weapons part of the kobudo weapons set. They are made up of two cylindrical sticks (approximately a foot long each) connected to each other by a metal chain, nylon cord, or rope. Nunchaku are commonly used in some types of karate. They are illegal in some countries like Germany, Canada, Spain, Norway, and the UK. They are illegal on a state level in other countries like the US.

Kinds of Nunchakus include the following:

Wood nunchaku

Wood nunchaku are made of solid wood.
They come in pairs connected by a ball bearing chain approximately five inches long.
Each chuck is approximately 12 inches long and an inch in diameter.
They are ideal for experienced and professional nunchaku users.

Plastic nunchaku

Plastic nunchaku are made of lightweight hollow plastic.
They come in pairs connected by a chrome chain.
Each chuck is approximately 12 inches long and an inch in diameter.
They are ideal for beginner nunchaku users and for training.

Foam padded nunchaku

Foam padded nunchaku are made of lightweight foam.
They come in pairs connected by a chrome chain or nylon string.
Each chuck is eight to 12 inches long and an inch in diameter.
They are ideal for beginner nunchaku users and for training.

Aluminum nunchaku


Aluminum nunchaku are made of lightweight aluminum.
They come in pairs connected by a metal chain or ball bearing chain.
Each chuck is approximately 12 inches long and an inch in diameter.
They are ideal for training and for intermediate nunchaku users.

Graphite nunchaku

Graphite nunchaku are made of durable and lightweight graphite.
They come in pairs connected by a cord swivel or nylon cord.
Each chuck is approximately 12 inches long and an inch in diameter.
They are ideal for competitive nunchacku users.

Acrylic nunchaku


Acrylic nunchaku are made of clear or colored acrylic.
They are impact-resistant.
They come in pairs connected by a cord swivel or nylon cord.
Each chuck is approximately 12 inches long and an inch in diameter.
They can be equipped with flashing LED bulbs.
They are ideal for competitive and exhibition nunchacku users.

Choosing Nunchakus (Buying Tips)

Materials used: For flair when doing nunchacku exhibitions, choose acrylic nunchaku with clear or colored chucks. They can be built with flashing LED bulbs that can easily draw the crowd's attention to you.  

Skill level:
