Guide to Paintball Barrels

Paintball Barrel : What is it?

pbbarrel1

Paintball barrels propel paintballs in a straight path as they are fired from paintball guns. They range from eight to 20 inches in length, and generally have uniform widths to fit all standard paintballs. Some paintball barrels have rifled or ridged interiors, which is meant to improve direction and accuracy. Others have holes, or ports, along the barrel to scatter air and reduce sound. Most barrels are designed to fit specific gun models, although a barrel adapter can be used to fit different gun and barrel types.

Kinds of Paintball Barrels include the following:

Aluminum Paintball Barrels

Aluminum barrels are fairly cheap and can be dyed in various colors and patterns. They are lighter than other barrel materials, making them ideal for beginners. They have relatively high friction, which makes them more prone to scratches.

Stainless Steel Paintball Barrels

Stainless steel barrels are more durable, scratch-resistant, and require less honing and maintenance. They are slightly heavier and more expensive than aluminum barrels. They cannot be dyed or anodized in different colors.

Two-piece Paintball Barrels

These barrels have aluminum fronts and stainless steel backs. The steel prevents scratching during acceleration, while the aluminum makes it lighter. They are usually more expensive than one-piece barrels.

Ceramic Paintball Barrels

Ceramic barrels have very low friction, making them highly resistant to scratches. They also have a self-cleaning feature that ejects paint debris from broken paintballs. They look delicate from the outside, but are actually cheap and durable.

Brass Paintball Barrels

Brass barrels have very low friction, but are still prone to scratches because of their soft surface. They are also heavier and dent more easily than other barrels. They need to be polished and maintained regularly, because they tent to tarnish quickly.

Choosing Paintball Barrels (Buying Tips)

Length: Choose a paintball barrel with a length you are comfortable with. Longer barrels generally have greater range and make less noise, but they also use up more gas and can be hard to handle. Avoid barrels longer than 14 inches, because the extra length increases friction and scratching. However, you may need a longer barrel for the winter because gas expands slower in cold weather.

Maintenance: Choose a paintball barrel that does not scratch or dent easily. Make sure the metal does not rust or stain from frequent polishing. Small scratches and tarnishes should come off with honing. Also make sure that paint will not stick or stain the surface.
