Guide to Paintball Guns

Paintball Gun : What is it?

pbgun1

Paintball guns, also called paintball markers, are used to fire paintballs at opponents. They are usually powered by pressurized air, commonly nitrogen or carbon dioxide, which can come from a tank or individual cartridges. Paintballs are stored in the gun's hopper, which feeds paintballs into a cylindrical barrel for firing. Most paintball guns fire at 300 feet per second (fps), which is enough to cause a paintball to burst upon impact.

Kinds of Paintball Guns include the following:

Pump action guns

These paintball guns have to be recocked after every shot. They fire at much slower rates, but are more accurate than semi-automatic guns. Many people use these guns to practice hitting targets with fewer shots.

Semi-automatic guns

Semi-automatics automatically recock and load paintballs after every shot. They allow higher firing rates and reduce aiming time. They are used in most tournaments and commercial paintball fields.

Fully-automatic guns

These guns fire continuously at very fast rates with the trigger held down. They contain microcontrollers that can be programmed to fire more than one shot at a time. They are usually prohibited from official tournaments and most playing fields.

Choosing Paintball Guns (Buying Tips)

Air source: Choose a paintball gun with a safe and reliable air source. CO2 tanks are more popular because of their lower cost and size, but they can damage your gun if not properly pressurized. If you often play in cold weather, choose a nitrogen-powered gun to prevent gas from escaping and damaging the gun's interior.

Barrel length: Choose a paintball gun with a long barrel for more accurate shots and quieter operation, and a short barrel for easier handling. Avoid barrels over 14 inches, because these can scratch and use up more gas, and can be difficult to hide in tight bunkers.
