Guide to Paintball Tanks

Paintball Tank : What is it?

paintballtank1

Paintball tanks are essentially compressed air storage devices (connected to paintball guns) that drive paintballs at high velocities. A tank can be filled with carbon dioxide or compressed nitrogen. Paintball tanks come in aluminum, steel, fiberglass, and carbon fiber types with pressures of anywhere from 12 to 20 ounces or 3,000 to 6,000 pounds per square inch (psi).

Kinds of Paintball Tanks include the following:

Aluminum Paintball Tanks

An aluminum paintball tank is made of lightweight aluminum filled with carbon dioxide. It prevents user fatigue during extended paintball play. Aluminum tanks are available in 12- to 20-ounce varieties.

Steel Paintball Tanks

A steel paintball tank is made of durable steel chromoly filled with compressed nitrogen air. It is heavier than an aluminum paintball tank but can withstand more blows without getting punctured. Steel tanks are available in 14- to 20-ounce screw-in varieties.

Fiberglass Paintball Tanks

A fiberglass paintball tank is made of lightweight fiberglass commonly filled with compressed nitrogen air that provides more consistent ball velocities. It is available in 3,000 to 4,500 pounds per square inch (psi) varieties.

Carbon Fiber Paintball Tanks

A carbon fiber paintball tank is wrapped in carbon fiber and filled with compressed nitrogen air. It is a low pressure tank (around 45 to 88 cubic inches). Most carbon tanks are available in 4,500 and 6,000 psi varieties.

Choosing Paintball Tanks (Buying Tips)

Gun fit: If you have a low pressure paintball gun, choose a paintball tank made of fiberglass or wrapped in carbon fiber. These tanks have a psi rating of around 4,500 or less, which is suitable for low pressure guns.

Size: For extended paintball play, look for a 20-ounce paintball tank that can provide enough carbon dioxide to fire 1,000 shots. If you want to get a nitrogen-filled paintball tank, choose a larger tank in 4,500 to 6,000 psi for firing 700 shots or more.

Gas type:  For a more consistent paintball velocity, choose a paintball tank filled with compressed nitrogen. Unlike carbon dioxide, compressed nitrogen can produce a constant speed, as it is unaffected by altitude or temperature differences.
