Guide to Powered Parachutes

Powered Parachute : What is it?

Powered Parachutes

Powered parachutes take off from the ground using small wheeled trikes attached to the parachute cords. They are commonly used for sport and recreation, and are classified as light sport aircraft in the United States. A Sport Pilot License is required to operate some powered parachutes.

Powered parachutes can go much faster than ordinary parachutes. Slower powered parachutes can go 25 to 35 miles per hour, while faster cruising models range from 35 to 40. They can also stay up much longer, with most models averaging three hours in the air.

Kinds of Powered Parachutes include the following:

Single place powered parachutes

Single place parachutes can accommodate one person in the trike. They are fairly easy to operate. A student can learn to drive this type of parachute in five to seven days. They do not require a license to operate.

Double place powered parachutes

Double place parachutes have two seats in the trike. They are more complicated to use than single place parachutes. They can only be operated with a license, which requires extensive training and legal procedures to obtain.

Choosing Powered Parachutes (Buying tips)

Weight: Choose a lightweight powered parachute that you can easily operate and set up. This is especially important for single parachutes, since you will be operating it on your own. Heavy parachutes may make the craft stronger, but they are also less agile. Double place parachutes can be slightly heavier, but should not weigh more than 400 pounds.

Durability: Choose a powered parachute made from heavy-duty materials. Look for a frame made of aircraft-grade aluminum or similar aircraft materials. You may have to choose between bolted or welded frames. Welded frames hold together better, but are difficult to repair. Bolted frames need to be checked and retightened regularly, but can be repaired on your own.
