Tall people need not apply - P. Unrein, Nov 18, 2009

I'm 6'3" and the bench is simply too small to be an effective workout tool, both length and width wise. Lengthwise, my head is not supported when it's in the decline position, and more over, it does not provide a foothold where a person can lock in their feet to keep from falling off when in the decline position. The bench is also much narrower than I have ever experienced, and I've been weightlifting for around 20 years. I'm not that wide (only weigh 190), but I prefer better support on my back than just down my spine.

It IS well constructed and probably would be a better fit for someone shorter than 6 feet, provided they didn't want to workout in the decline position. Again, the lack of a foothold to stabilize one's body in the decline position would still be a deal breaker for me.

I'm in the process of returning the product. The good news is that found a used bench in pristine condition and which meets my requirements at Play It Again sports for $10 less. Still, a lot of frustration in repackaging the product, hauling it back to the nearest UPS drop off store, and paying $30 for shipping. Lesson learned here: tall folks like me should physically try out equipment in a brick and mortar store to make sure it fits their body before venturing out on the internet.

Great Bench for Small Spaces - Linus Gibson, Sep 23, 2009

Trying to find a suitable bench for small spaces can be a real chore. Fortunately, the Best Fitness BFFID10 FID bench is a worthwile solution to that problem. Out of the box, assembly is a 2-step process - secure the incline back to the seat hinge using the included steel rod and alan wrench, and lock the legs in place with the included safety pins (for those intending to leave it in one position, the legs can be secured with bolts, nuts and washers instead, which are also included along with the appropriate tools).

You can choose from 5 incline back positions and 3 locking positions for each leg, allowing you to set it up for a variety of flat, incline, and decline exercises. At first glance, the incline back doesn't appear to lay perfectly flat but once the legs are locked into place, only the seat itself is at a very slight incline. While its perfectly flat, you can hold onto the handles of the incline back during ab crunches and other ab exercises, a nice bonus indeed, not to mention it's upgradeable with the optional accessories Best Fitness makes for this bench.

One of the key highlights of the bench is its size. End to end, the bench measures about 3-1/2' when in the flat position, though this can be a bit of a double-edged sword. It's great that it doesn't take up a lot of room, but this also doesn't make it an ideal bench for tall people. If the length from your pelvic bone to the base of the back of your head is longer than this, you may want to consider a longer bench. The bench is also on the somewhat skinny side, measuring only 9-3/4" at its widest point, so keep that in mind when factoring in your body type.

Another key highlight is its storage-friendliness, allowing you to store the bench under a bed or in the back of a closet, which is a fantastic feature that is lacking from most home workout benches in general. However, there's a bit of a missed opportunity here - neither the legs when completely folded in nor the incline back while in the flat position can lock into place. Instead, there are 2 steel loops on each leg for securing them together with a bungie cable or strap, and the incline back just hangs if stored vertically. For these reasons, the bench is best suited for being stored under a bed.

Overall, the Best Fitness BFFID10 FID bench wins in the versatility department. The cushioning should provide admirable support throughout your workouts, but the cushioning is pretty firm so don't expect it to compare to the likes of your mattress or favorite sofa. It's also a little disappointing that the legs and incline back cannot be locked into place, which can make storing the bench in closets a clunky ordeal and further keeps it from being a 5-star product in my opinion. Still, the solid construction, expandability, and low price tag for this portable bench make it well worth the investment regardless.
