Rating : a good buy - Kaderine, Oct 26, 2009
This mat is great! It is so soft and thick that I don't feel the hard gym floor compared to my old mat which limited what I could and could not do. Because this mat is so thick though, the imprints left on it stays for a while and it makes a creaking crunching sound when switching between positions. But other than that, a good buy!
Rating : As pictured - L. Edwards, Oct 02, 2009
This exercise mat is perfect for exercises on hard floors. Forget a 1/4 inch mat, this 1/2 inch provides comfort and support when doing back rolling pilates exercises. There was no 'smell' and the mat was ready to use immediately.
Rating : Odorless and soft - the Low Frequency, Mar 14, 2009
I have a tiled living room floor as well as something of a scant rear-end, so on a regular, thin pilates mat any situp-like movement causes just enough discomfort to allow me an excuse not to do them. And so, depending on how you look at it this mat is either a great gift or a great curse to me, because I'm left with no excuses not to exercise (besides laziness, which I of course re-name very cleverly, but that's better left to another discussion I suppose). The mat is thick and pillowy without being squishy, so it allows one to put all their weight on bony areas like tailbones and knees without sacrificing (much) stability. I haven't used it for balance intensive Yoga poses so I can't comment on how it would perform in that arena.
So why did I only give it 4 stars instead of 5? Because I'm terribly picky mainly, and the mat I received was different from the one pictured both on Amazon's product page as well as on the GoFit website. The ridges on mine run vertically from top to bottom rather than horizontally as pictured. Also I don't care for the color much, which is a paler and more sterile looking blue in real life (though I might be able to use that as an excuse not to use it now that I've thought of it, so this might actually be a positive characteristic...) It also doesn't want to lay totally flat after unrolling it, but I'm not sure any mat that's kept rolled up would do so anyway. Again, it's only fair to state that these negatives haven't played any major role in its performance, just that they were annoying enough to keep it from getting 5 stars from me.
Oh, one other thing I must mention is that the mat is more or less odorless. I read in reviews for many other mats that they had a room-filling rubber stench that was impossible to get rid of and this played a big role in my decision to try this one over others. I'm happy to report there are no stinky rooms in my house, mat related or otherwise. And so now, as for excuses not to exercise, I think I better write a few more of these reviews...
Rating : Is a GoFit Mat fit for a dog? - M. E. Luckritz, Apr 27, 2008
I was very happy with the quality of the mat. It is such tough material, yet comfortable, I have no excuses now for not exercising. I have been considering buying another one, cutting it in half and making 2 slip covers to use for my dog's bed(s). I think it would last longer than many beds made just for dogs. She would love that!
Rating : Great mat, worth the price - NYChristina, Mar 29, 2008
I've never done mat work before (bought this with "Pilates for Weight Loss" video), and this is perfect for me! I love it. It is a very comfortable thickness for the exercises I do on my back and while sitting. It is also very forgiving; I have knee problems, but this mat is thick enough that there is even enough cushion when I do the stretches on my knees -- no pain!
When I was deciding which mat to buy, I thought that $35 was a little high (especially since I'm on a budget). I ultimately decided that the investment for a superior (and much thicker mat) was worth the extra money (and I also justified that it was cheaper than joining a gym!). I don't regret this purchase for a minute. Highly recommended!
The ONLY downside is that it's a little bulky to store, but that's to be expected, given the thickness. We live in a small apartment in NYC, so it fits (folded in half) behind our loveseat very easily. Other than re-rolling and putting it back in the box every time (ugh), I'm not sure where else I could keep it!
