Rating : Latches loose, handle broke - stookinc, Mar 08, 2010
The case seemed high quality when I first purchased it.
The shell is hard enough and the metal edge provides a secure closure.
The top handle had some resistance when I tried to pivot it out so it can be grabbed. I applied no more than 20lbs of pull and the handle binding snapped! The rotating pin wasn't aligned right, so the leverage from the pivot snapped the pin housing.
I also noticed that the locking latches seemed a bit loose. In the closed and locked position, the metal loop that pulled down on the top 1/2 of the case was barely on there. A 5lbs pull outwards on the latch loop (not the part that unbuckles it, but the part that pulls the top half down) caused it to unlatch completely, even when locked! The other 2 buckles were lose too, but not enough to come unlatched.
Luckily both latches and handle are replacement parts on their website. But it doesn't seem like buying more latches would fix this design issue.
I'm afraid the contents would come flying out if the latch is ever pulled by something/someone even when locked.
SKB products for other industries use beefier latches, but their golf case latches are definitely not professional grade. It may be enough for cheap clubs, but not more than that.
Rating : Great solid Golf Travel Case - R. Lavender, Feb 10, 2010
This is a great travel case. That being said, I have no experience with any other. I have taken one trip with it so far and it worked wonderfully. You could tell the airlines were rough with the case but my clubs were in perfect condition upon arriving at my destination. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is due to my one complaint. The handles are screwed into the case with what looks like metal screws. However, the hole is plastic so the screws seem to loosen a bit too easily. For me, this didn't come close to being a major problem but someone using this bag on a more constant basis would probably want to come up with a way to secure the handles better. If the handle ever fell off, getting this case around would become much more difficult.
Rating : Highly recommended for maximum protection! A+ quality. - Mark E, Nov 13, 2009
When this arrived I was very impressed. From the moment I took it out of the box I could tell it was a well constructed quality product. It also looks great. I closely inspected the wheels, locks, handles, hinges, etc. - and while I wouldn't want to try this - I think I could take a hammer to any part of this thing and not break it. You can also tell they put some thought in to the engineering and design. For example, the in-line wheels are recessed into the case with protective covers on the side, and the latches are protected so they won't make contact if (i.e., when) the case is dropped on its side.
Right after I placed my order, I went back and read the description and looked at the photo. I realized there was no mention of a TSA lock, and the photo shows standard metal latches with no apparent place for a user supplied lock. However, I called the company the next day and they said the photo is from an older version and all their golf cases now come with TSA locks. The photo for the Deluxe Case (2SKB-4814W) shows the correct lock and latches. There are three latches, with the center one locking.
Without question, this is a big case, but not really any larger that it has to be to fit a standard set of clubs and drivers. It stands just slightly over 50" and the depth and width are 12-1/4" x 13." So it's fairly efficient considering you can pack a 12" standard bag and clubs. As others have noted, you could have trouble fitting it in a trunk or transporting it, but that's probably true with most hard-shell (non collapsing) cases. I considered a hybrid bag/hard-top case, which would be a good option for somebody concerned about size, but for maximum protection I would definitely recommend this case. It's really not much harder to wheel around than a hybrid (or soft case, which I would not recommend for airline travel), and shouldn't cost any extra to check than standard baggage for most airlines. Many airlines have specific allowances for sports and other equipment; it may exceed the the maximum dimensions as long as it meets the weight requirement. They also won't make you sign a liability waiver. Compared to hybrid and soft cases, this case is a little heavy at about 18 lbs empty, but even fully loaded should easily weigh-in under the 50 lbs max set by most airlines. Another disadvantage of a hard case for some may be storage, but I just use it to store my clubs and it doesn't take up any additional space the the garage.
Rating : For tripods and light stands - Richard Crowley, Sep 18, 2009
I bought this case for an international tour with tripods and tall light stands (for audio recording). I packed it up with all my stands and cables (97 pounds worth!!) It made the round-trip PDX->AMS->OTP and back again with only a minor problem (the end of one of the stands punched through the top end). Recommend reinforcing the ends if you are carrying heavy objects with sharp ends! :-) Overall, it held up great, even with all that weight. If I had it to do over, I would buy one of these again.
Rating : Not Just a Golf Case - Karl E. Hays, Sep 08, 2009
I purchased this case for my son's fencing gear after seeing several fencers using golf travel bags. I couldn't be happier. It is perfect for protecting gear when traveling. With a soft-sided bag there is always a risk that equipment will be damaged by less-than-careful baggage handlers at the airport. No worries here. It locks too, which adds an extra level of comfort when you have to leave the bag unattended at a tournament.
