About StairMaster
In 1983, a Tulsa, Oklahoma company created a fitness training product line that stepped up exercise to a new level--StairMaster machines. The invention was credited for being "among the first machines to turn gyms into modern exercise arenas" by USA Today, the nation’s most popular daily newspaper. Along with PDAs, laptops, and mobile phones, StairMaster machines have been labeled among the top 25 inventions that changed our lives over the past 25 years (USA Today, May 21, 2007). In fact, it was the only fitness product on the list.

More than two decades later, StairMaster products are still hard at work in gyms and homes preparing everyone from elite athletes to people in uniform, while being mentioned almost daily in the nation’s news media and sitcoms like Seinfeld. Ed Viesturs, America’s leading high-altitude mountaineer, relies on StairMaster trainers to prepare for climbs such as Mount Everest. "I do an hour on a StairMaster with a 50-pound pack on my back after simulating climbing movements in the gym," said Viesturs in Outdoor magazine. "These sessions hurt, but not as much as having to walk away from a climb because you weren't fit enough."

American hero Jim Campbell also looks to StairMaster trainers to maintain his physical readiness. A firefighter from Indianapolis, Campbell set the StairMaster StepMill record in 2006 (113.4 vertical miles in 24 hours). More than just a hobby, Campbell put his intensive training to use by rescuing a person trapped on the second story of a burning building--a feat that earned him a special commendation. Campbell joins thousands of firefighters who routinely train on StairMaster products to maintain top form. Are StairMaster machines a good solution for safe and effective lower body and cardio conditioning? Just ask each new firefighter candidate who must achieve 60 steps per minute for 3 minutes on a StairMaster StepMill while wearing a 50-pound vest and fire protective clothing ("turnouts").

My Wife and I Both Love It! - First Things First, Mar 13, 2008

The first thing I want to say is that as of this writing the Amazon listing for this Stairmaster still reads: "comes fully assembled." This is simply wrong. In fact we had to hire two men with a full tool kit to assemble it (it took around an hour) and the cost was nearly $125.00. The good news is that Amazon refunded the assembly money to us, and says that the listing will be corrected.

My wife and I both love the unit. It is solid as a rock, ours doesn't "smell," I'm not an aerospace engineer so I can't comment authoritatively on the material the other reviewer is complaining about, but ours looks similar to all the steppers I've used in gyms through the years.

I can't imagine how much cheaper (again I'm responding to the other reviewer) they could sell something like this with all the innards and electronics involved. We feel we got our money's worth, and the company stands behind their products with a solid warranty.

TERRIBLE! - C. Mattioni, Mar 07, 2008

The only good thing I have to say about this stairmaster is that it does seem to be mechanically sound. I originally had the 4000PT which was wonderful. I thought that a newer version would be great, however, I was really disappointed! I was shocked at how cheaply it was made with what seems to be a very low end plastic type of material. I had to take great care while assembling it because it seemed on the verge of breaking as I put it together! Anyone who has used the 4000PT knows that it is built like a tank so you can imagine my shock at the lack of quality of the 4200PT. In addition, anyone who is chemically sensitive should beware. There was a definite odor when I removed it from the box which immediately gave me a headache. This is often a problem with cheap plastics, etc. I cannot believe that I paid over $2,000 for this piece of junk!

Late but worth the wait - Linda Castilleja, Feb 02, 2007

I absolute love it. It came late, but the product was upgraded because the company did not have the item I wanted. I wish I would have ordered one sooner.
