Pulley : What is it?
| Pulleys are basic machines used for lifting heavy objects or loads. They consist of a wheel, a rope, and a belt or chain attached to a load to lift it off the ground. Instead of pushing a load up, pulleys drive force upwards to lift it effortlessly. Pulleys are mainly used for climbing and rescue operations. They are used with ropes eight to 13 millimeters in diameter for self-belaying, hauling, or rope climbing. |

Kinds of Pulleys include the following: |
Fixed pulleys
Fixed pulleys are single pulleys attached to static surfaces like walls or ceilings. They are made of solid bronze or steel that does not need manual lubrication. To lift a load, they use effort greater than the load. A load is lifted by pulling down one end of the rope. They are ideal for rescue operations with a yield of 1 to 4. Depending on the rope diameter, they have an approximate breaking strength of 22kN and a working load of around 5kN.
Climbing pulleys
Climbing pulleys are used for climbing. They are made of aluminum and stainless steel. They can be used with ropes up to 13 millimeters in diameter. They have an approximate working load of 2.5kN and a breaking load of 10kN.
Rescue pulleys
Rescue pulleys are used for rescue operations. They are made of durable aluminum. They can accommodate up to three rescue carabiners.
They can be used with ropes with a maximum of 13 millimeters in diameter and a maximum load of approximately 190 kilograms.
They have a breaking load of 32kN and a working load of 4kN.
Combination pulleys
Combination pulleys merge fixed pulleys and rope clamps. They are used in rescue operations, self-belaying, rope climbing, and hauling systems. They can be used with ropes eight to 13 millimeters in diameter. They have an approximate working load of 2.5kN and a breaking load of 10kN. |

Use: Choose a pulley that suits the activity you intend to do. For rescue operations, choose one that can carry human weight and heavier loads. Also consider the rope diameter it can be used with. Most rescue pulleys can accommodate ropes with eight to 13 millimeters in diameter.
Durability: For durability, choose a rust- and corrosion-resistant metal pulley.
Self-lubrication: Consider getting a self-lubricating pulley if you frequently forget to oil it after use.
