Guide to Punching Bags

Punching Bag : What is it?

punchingbag1

Punching bags help improve punching techniques, physical strength, and cardiac fitness.  They are sturdy bags with a foam padding filled with grains, sand, water or other materials that can be affixed to stands or hung from a ceiling.  Their outer and inner materials are designed to take constant physical abuse without breaking and absorb the impact of the blows without harming the user.

Kinds of Punching Bags include the following:

Standing bags

Standing punching bags are freestanding bags. They are also called wavemasters. They have hollow bases made of polyethylene that can be filled with water or sand. They allow for easy rolling away and storage. They are padded with high impact foam and covered with durable vinyl. They have eight height adjustment settings from 47 to 68 inches.

The weight of the water or sand allows them to stand on the ground. The base, core material, and center of gravity allows them to automatically stand up when punched. They are ideal for punching and kicking because their foam padding is close to the floor, providing a striking surface for kicking.

Water is usually preferred as filling because it provides a better wave-like motion and energy feedback. Water-filled standing punching bags weigh around 270 pounds when filled. Those filled with sand have a thick and rock-like feel, and they are generally heavier than the water-filled ones.

Hanging bags

Hanging punching bags are heavy bags suspended by hooks and chains from a hanger or wall mount. They are extremely durable. They are padded with high impact foam and filled with grains or similar materials. They provide a fluid workout and develop strength and stamina. They sway a little, which is good for developing dodging and improving coordination and footwork.

Choosing Punching Bags (Buying Tips)

Sway:  Choose a hanging punch that gives a little sway when punched.  A punching bag with too much sway can be difficult to hit. Hitting one with no sway does not provide adequate impact absorption and can damage your bones and muscles.

Covering:  Choose a punching bag covered in leather to get a more comfortable feel and a longer-lasting bag.
