Guide to Recumbent Trikes

Recumbent Trike : What is it?

recumbentbike1

A recumbent trike or tricycle is the three-wheeled variety of the recumbent bicycle. It is ideal for people with limb or balance disabilities. A recumbent trike positions the rider in a reclined position to support his/her back. The rider’s legs extend forward to reach the pedals, which are almost in the same height as the seat. The steering wheel or handlebars are above or over the seat.

Recumbent trike wheels are relatively smaller and farther apart compared to the wheels of an upright bicycle. A recumbent tricycle can turn sharply without tipping over and can even climb slowly but stably.

Kinds of Recumbent Trikes include the following:

Delta Recumbent Trikes

The delta recumbent trike has two wheels in front and one wheel at the back. It seats the rider a little higher and lets the rider’s heels slide back under the front edge of the seat. It is easy to sit down and get up from this type of recumbent trike. It usually has a shorter turning radius.

Tadpole Recumbent Trikes

The tadpole recumbent trike has two front wheels and one rear wheel. It is considered a high performance recumbent trike because it usually has a wider gear range. It seats the rider low (aerodynamically).

Choosing Recumbent Trikes (Buying Tips)

Fairings. If you need speed, choose a recumbent trike with ‘fairings,’ an aerodynamic device that reduces wind drag. This is especially beneficial for a long wheelbase trike but may not have much of a difference when used in a short wheelbase trike.  A faired tailbox can increase speed by 5% to 10%.

Enclosure. For all-weather riding, choose a velomobile with an enclosure to protect you from the sun or rain.

Lightweight.  If you intend to bring your trike along with you in your car, choose a lightweight sub-20lb-trike.

Frame. For durability, choose a recumbent trike with a steel frame fitted with a hard-shell seat and full mudguards.

Rack.  Choose a recumbent trike with a luggage rack if you often carry a bag, etc.
