Guide to Saddle Soaps

Saddle Soap : What is it?

saddlesoap1

Saddle soaps are usually made from a combination of a base or alkali and a fatty acid solution. Just like regular soaps, saddle soaps clean saddles by attracting dirt, sweat, and grime particles away from the leather material. This attraction happens once it is worked up into a light and dry lather and applied onto the saddles.

Unlike a regular soap, a saddle soap should not be thoroughly mixed with water that can damage leather. It is ideally used with a minimal amount of water, just enough to get a dry lather that can easily be wiped away with a clean flannel cloth or dry sponge.

When used properly, a saddle soap can clean and protect your saddle at the same time. It contains some oil that moisturizes the leather, keeping it soft and supple. When used after every ride, saddle soaps can help prevent leather saddles from cracking and becoming brittle.

Kinds of Saddle Soaps include the following:

Glycerin Saddle Soaps

Glycerin saddle soap is made of vegetable or animal glycerin. It contains natural oils that preserve the natural oils of leather saddles, keeping them soft, supple, and comfortable.
It usually comes in the form of a clear or an opaque soap bar. Glycerin saddle soap should be used sparingly and should be applied using a clean, semi-dry sponge. It is expensive.

Natural Saddle Soaps

Natural saddle soap is made up of a combination of vegetable glycerin and animal milk.
It effectively removes dirt, sweat, and grime and restores the saddles’ natural oil at the same time. It can be used for most types of leather saddles except roughout leather and suede saddles.

Scented Saddle Soaps

Scented saddle soap is made up of natural glycerin and scented oils such as sandalwood, citrus, and vanilla bean. It contains goat’s milk ideal for cleaning and conditioning leather. It can come in translucent or colored bars. Scented saddle soap can be custom-made to have the specific smell.

DIY Saddle Soaps

A DIY (do-it-yourself) saddle soap usually contains soap flakes, beeswax, and neat’s foot oil. The soap flakes are dissolved into a pan of simmering water. As the soap melts, mix beeswax and neat's foot oil into a double bowler. Combine the two mixtures, pour into molds, and let dry. Test the finished product on a small patch of leather for any signs of darkening.

Choosing Saddle Soaps (Buying Tips)

Materials used: Choose a saddle soap that contains glycerin because it is an excellent cleaning agent. Use only a little water to make a lather and a damp sponge to apply it on your leather saddle.
