Scuba Compressor : What is it?
| Scuba compressors help keep clean, breathable air inside a scuba tank. They increase the pressure of the air inside the tank to prevent it from escaping into the water. Unlike other types of air compressors, which compress air to about 150 pounds per square inch (psi), scuba compressors often reach pressures as high as 5,000 psi. Scuba compressors pump air into an integrated filtering system, which ensures a clean stream of air from the tank to the diver. |

Kinds of Scuba Compressors include the following: |
Low-pressure Scuba Compressors These scuba compressors are lightweight and buoyant, and can be mounted on flotation rings. They are usually supplied with a hose about 60 feet long, allowing them to be operated from the boat as well. The compressor supplies air directly to the diver’s mouth, using an air line running from the compressor to the tank. High-pressure Scuba Compressors High-pressure Scuba Compressors can compress air from 3,200 to 5,000 psi. They are commonly used to fill diving tanks, and are used in commercial diving and dive shops. They are usually too heavy and bulky for leisure or recreational use. |

Filtering: Choose a scuba compressor with a reliable air filter. Make sure it can keep out small particles and keep the air fresh and breathable. Most filters require frequent maintenance and cleaning to stay effective, so check your compressor’s filters regularly. Maximum pressure: Choose a scuba compressor that with a reasonable pressure capacity. The compressor’s capacity should be in proportion with your tank size. A small tank may not be able to handle a high-pressure compressor, and a low-pressure model may not sufficiently compress air in a large tank. |
