Guide to Scuba Masks

Scuba Mask : What is it?

scubamask1

Scuba masks are watertight goggles that protect the eyes from saltwater and small particles when scuba diving. They also improve underwater vision by reducing distortion and enhancing the available light.

Scuba masks are usually made of hard plastic, with a rubber or silicone skirt around each lens that cling to the skin and prevent water from entering the mask. An elastic or adjustable strap is usually attached to both ends, securing the mask around the head.

Kinds of Scuba Masks include the following:

Single-lens Scuba Masks

Single-lens Scuba Masks are made with one piece of plastic covered with a silicone frame. They are more solid than double-lens masks, but can break more easily. They usually do not allow for extra features, such as wide vision and reducing distortion.

Double-lens Scuba Masks
Double-lens Scuba Masks consist of two layers of plastic, either held together by the frame or molded together around the edges. They also offer enhanced peripheral vision and added protection against physical damage.

Three-pane Scuba Masks
Three-pane Scuba Masks consist of a single-layer front lens with two windows on either side. They are lighter than four-pane masks, but offer limited peripheral vision.

Four-pane Scuba Masks
Four-pane Scuba Masks have left and right side windows, and a front lens divided into two parts. They are more flexible and will fit a wider range of sizes than three-pane masks.

Choosing Scuba Masks (Buying Tips)

Fit: Choose a scuba mask that fits snugly over your eyes. Make sure it is completely watertight and will not allow any water to get in. Look for those with thin, elastic silicone skirts around the frames. Make sure the frame sticks tightly to your skin and will not be dislodged by water or currents.

Comfort:
Choose a scuba mask that feels comfortable on your skin. The strap should not be too tight around your head, as this could make you dizzy and tire you out easily. Look for a mask with adjustable straps rather than elastic ones. Also, some types of rubber are known to cause allergies, so make sure that the frames are made of soft, non-allergenic silicone.

Weight: Choose a lightweight scuba mask that you can wear for long hours without getting uncomfortable. Make sure it allows you to move your head around while underwater. Look for one with thin but durable plastic lenses.
