Powered parachutes take off from the ground using small wheeled trikes attached to the parachute cords. They are commonly used for sport and recreation, and are classified as light sport aircraft in the United States. A Sport Pilot License is required to operate some powered parachutes.

Powered parachutes can go much faster than ordinary parachutes. Slower powered parachutes can go 25 to 35 miles per hour, while faster cruising models range from 35 to 40. They can also stay up much longer, with most models averaging three hours in the air.
