A Smith machine is a weight training equipment that features a barbell constricted to move only vertically upwards and downwards through slotted steel runners. The barbell is lifted as high as possible and then released onto the slots. It does not have to be dropped to the ground, reducing the risk of getting back problems. It also does not need to be re-racked after doing a set of lifts and pulls since the barbell can be secured at any point, which eliminates the need for a spotter.
Smith machines are used for performing bench presses or squats. They are generally safer to use than standard barbells because they does not fall backwards, forwards, or sideways. However, they restrict the exercise to a single plane of motion, which can strain the body and limit the development of functional strength.
This type of Smith machine is the mechanized version of a power rack or a power cage. Metal plates are attached to both ends of the long bar that travels up and down the steel runners.
Mix-Smith machines
This type of Smith machine integrates other exercise equipment such as a squat rack or a power cage. It has a lat pull-down station and a low-row-cable.
