Guide to Snowboards

Snowboard : What is it?

Snowboards1

Snowboards are the skateboards or surfboards used by snowboarders for traveling down slopes covered in real or artificial snow. They are thick, narrow boards with metal edges and upturned lips at each end. They have bindings that are attached to the feet, allowing the snowboarders to slide down slopes without using ski poles.

Kinds of Snowboards include the following:

Freeride snowboards

  • Freeride snowboards, also known as all mountain boards, are the most popular types of snowboards.
  • They float well in powdery surfaces, making them ideal for mountain, park, and halfpipe snow surfaces.
  • They are used for performing different snowboarding techniques such as carving, jumping, and catching air.
  • They usually have a directional shape with the tip shaped differently from the tail.
  • They are ideal for beginners because they are soft and easy to maneuver.

Freestyle snowboards

  • Freestyle snowboards are wider, more stable, and more forgiving than freeride snowboards.
  • They are short, lightweight, responsive, and easy to maneuver, making them ideal for beginners.
  • They are used for performing spins, grabs, and fakie riding in halfpipes and terrain parks.
  • However, they have limited stability and edge grip, making them unsuitable for fast cruising and turn carving.

Carving snowboards

  • Carving snowboards are also known as alpine or race snowboards because they look like the larger versions of skis.
  • They are narrower than freeride and freestyle snowboards.
  • They are made long and narrow to provide cleaner carved turns and faster speeds.
  • They provide fast and clean edge turns, excellent stability, faster speeds, and superior edge-holding power.
  • They can come in symmetrical and asymmetrical styles.
  • They are used for one direction only just like freeride snowboards.
  • They are ideal for snowboard racers, as they are designed more for carving downhill than performing tricks.

Choosing Snowboards (Buying Tips)

Length: Choose a snowboard with a length according to your height, weight, and riding style. It should reach your chin or mouth when held vertically. Get a longer snowboard for deep powder riding and racing, and a shorter board for freestyle and trick snowboarding

Width:
For women and small-footed men, choose a narrow snowboard. For heavy and big-footed men, get a wide snowboard. The right width should allow your boots or snowboarding shoes to extend past the board edges by one or two centimeters while standing in a riding position.
