Kinds of Spearguns include the following:

Band guns

  • Band guns have quality trigger systems and heat-treated shafts.
  • They are further classified into two polar types: multiple band wooden guns and European band guns.
  • They also come as hybrid guns, which carry the combined features of the two types of band guns.

Multiple band wooden guns

  • Multiple band wooden guns are also known as American tree trunks or American guns.
  • They are crafted by hand using durable exotic wood such as teak and mahogany.
  • They have heavy, mid-handled shafts, butt extensions, and other robust components.
  • Most models have trigger mechanisms that can hold 600 to1,000 pounds of weight.
  • They have proponents ideal for catching big fish such as tuna.
  • Despite their name, they are not native to the United States. They are also available in Australia and some Asian countries.

European band guns

  • European band guns are also known as pea shooters. They were originally made for shooting and catching small fish in the Mediterranean.
  • Now they can also be used for shooting large fish.
  • They have a rear-handled design with the hand crook located near the center of the barrel for creating small muzzle flips and excellent accuracy.

Most models have long and light shafts for increased shooting accuracy.
    They are generally mass produced.
  • They are made of high quality materials such as carbon fiber, glass-reinforced nylon, and Kevlar.

Hybrid band guns

  • Hybrid band guns have the combined features of the American and European band guns.
  • They have open muzzles, full length rails, heavy shafts, and extra bands.
  • Some American band guns are customized to become European with lighter shafts, raised bands, and Tahitian tips.
  • Most models are made of carbon fiber that provides added durability and performance.
  • They are used for shooting and catching different varieties of fish.

Pneumatic band guns

  • Pneumatic band guns are the more advanced versions of spring guns.
  • They store energy that can be lost after a few rounds of shooting.
  • They can comer with a rear-handled or mid-handled design. However, mid-handled pneumatic band guns are not readily available in the market anymore.
  • They are ideal for open water fishing, dark blue fishing, and small cave fishing.
  • Most models have reduced interior dimensions for easy exploration and penetration of cracks and for increasing ejection speeds.

Choosing Spearguns (Buying Tips)

Shaft length: Choose a speargun with a shaft length suitable for that type of fishing you do. For long range fishing, choose a speargun with a longer shaft. Get one with a shorter shaft for easy maneuverability.

Shaft diameter: Look for a speargun with a shaft diameter of 9/32 inches if you want speed and a lower mass. It also has less momentum, preventing its tip and shaft from being damaged especially if you hit on a hard surface such as reefs.
