Guide to Splint Boots

Splint Boot : What is it?

splintboot1

Splint boots, also known as brushing boots, protect the ligaments and tendons of the horse's lower legs.
They are made of hard and thick plates that protect the horse's splint bones when they are hit by the opposite hooves while galloping or jumping.

Splint boots are commonly used for horses engaged in gymkhana games, show-jumping, Western reining, and cross-country jumping.

Kinds of Splint Boots include the following:

Nylon Splint Boots

Nylon Splint Boots are made of ballistic nylon pads.
They are smooth to the touch and can be easily cleaned. Simply wipe or hose them down after each use.
Some models have leather or neoprene flaps for a more secure fit.
Nylon Splint Boots are inexpensive, making them ideal for beginners and for training.

Neoprene Splint Boots

Neoprene Splint Boots are made of shock absorbent neoprene usually up to a quarter of an inch thick.
Some models have cordura or suede padding for extra splint bone protection.
They can be secured to the horse's lower legs by hook-and-loop straps, Velcro straps, or slide-through buckles.
Neoprene Splint Boots are ideal for intermediate to professional competitive horses.

Kevlar Splint Boots

These types of splint boots are made of lightweight and bulletproof Kevlar with EVA foam pads for a more comfortable fit.
Hook-and-loop closures secure them to the lower legs.

Choosing Splint Boots (Buying Tips)

Fit: Choose splint boots that fit snugly. To ensure the correct fit, strap on the splint boots on your horse's upper legs first before carefully sliding them down to prevent rubbing on your horse's hide. They should be snug enough not to slide down but not too tight to interfere with circulation. Make sure the padding faces the insides of the legs, with the wider part at the bottom.

Materials used: If you are on a budget, choose Nylon Splint Boots. They are also easy to clean and provide ample protection for your horse during training. Get expensive splint boots made of neoprene or Kevlar if your horse needs more protection from hoof cuts and wounds.
