Guide to Stringing Machines

Stringing Machine : What is it?

stringingmachine1

A stringing machine is used by mounting a bare racquet by its head and throat on top of the machine. The preferred racquets string is then pulled through the racquet head until the desired tension is reached.

Stringing machines come in drop weight, spring tension, electronic, and portable types. Different types use different methods of stringing to provide anywhere from eight to 90 pounds of tension to the racquet being strung. Stringing machines are found in most racquet stores, sports clubs, and specialty stores that sell sports racquets and other related equipment.

Kinds of Stringing Machines include the following:

Drop weight stringing machine

A drop weight stringing machine employs drop weight tensioning system. It has movable weights connected to a rod that tightens the string, plus strategically placed mounting points and ratchet grippers. Tension range is from eight to 90 pounds.

Spring tension stringing machine

These machines have spring tension winders that are wound automatically.  Cranks are turned to reach the desired weight. It uses swivel clamps and string clamps to hold the string in place with minimal clamping pressure. Tension range is from nine to 90 pounds.

Electronic stringing machine

An electronic stringing machine uses electronic tensioning and a dual mounting system. It has an adjustable pad and a ball bearing turntable base and uses swivel clamps that can move up and down for stringing any racquet type. Tension range is from 10 to 90 pounds.

Portable stringing machine

A portable stringing machine has an adjustable throat and head mounting post for holding different racquet head sizes. The string is automatically gripped by a ball bearing gripper. It uses a spring clutch for stringing without the need for clamping and repulling. Portable stringing machines have a tension range of 10 to 90 pounds.

Choosing Stringing Machines (Buying Tips)

Padded mounting post: Choose a stringing machine with a padded throat and a head mounting post that protect the racquet from getting scratched, dented, or deformed.

Adjustable mounting post: Choose a stringing machine with adjustable head and throat mounting posts that allow you to string a racquet regardless of its diameter or head type.

Frame mount system: Look for a stringing machine with a four- or six-point frame mounting to support your racquet better and to keep the frame intact while stringing.

Accessories: Choose a stringing machine that comes with tools like razor cutters, pliers, and awls to make stringing easier.
