Guide to Tae Kwon Do Belts

Tae Kwon Do Belt : What is it?

TaeKwonDoBelts1

The tae kwon do belt is worn and tied around the waist of the kimono or the tae kwon do jacket.  It is made of cotton or polycotton with several lines of stitching. As part of the tae kwon do ranking system, it comes in different colors that correspond to the student's skill and training level. The master presents the student with a new belt as he progresses through the color gup belts.  The tae kwon do belt is divided into three distinct groups: the white belt indicating the student is a beginner, the color belt indicating the student is an amateur, and the black belt indicating the student is an expert or a master.

Kinds of Tae Kwon Do Belts include the following:

White belt (beginner)

The white belt comes with a newly-bought tae kwon do uniform.
It is lowest color in the ranking system. The student wearing it is ungraded or training as a 9th gup.

The white color also symbolizes “innocence” and having no knowledge of the tae kwon do martial arts.

It is automatically gained once a person starts taking tae kwon do lessons.
It is worn for a minimum of eight weeks.

Color belt (amateur)

The color belt comes in (in order) yellow, orange, green, blue, brown, and red.
The yellow belt signifies that the student is still getting to know the basic techniques. The student is compared to a plant growing its roots. It requires a minimum of eight weeks of training.

The orange belt signifies that the student has advanced in the basic techniques and become more aware of his abilities. It represents stronger roots growing deeper into the soil. It requires a minimum of eight weeks of training.

The green belt signifies that the student is growing as a tae kwon do student. The student is compared to a plant growing its leaves. It is divided into the green belt and senior green belt, which has a black stripe in the middle.  Each category requires a minimum of eight weeks of training.

The blue belt signifies that the student is reaching higher. The student is compared to a plant growing upward to the sky.  It is divided into the blue belt and the senior blue belt, which has a black stripe in the middle. Each category requires a minimum of eight weeks of training.

The brown belt signifies that the student has developed the strength, determination, and focus needed to start breaking wooden boards.  The brown color symbolizes the color of wood. It is divided into the brown belt and the senior brown belt, which has a black stripe in the middle. Each category requires a minimum of eight weeks of training.

The red belt signifies danger. It warns the student to control and practice his movements and also warns the opponent of the student’s skill level.  It is divided into the red belt and the senior red belt, which has a black stripe in the middle. Each category requires a minimum of eight weeks of training.

Black belt (expert)

The black belt is the opposite of white, indicating the student's maturity in the tae kwon do martial arts.

It signifies being impenetrable by darkness and fear.
It has nine degrees. The first degree black belt, also called a probationary black belt, has a white stripe in the middle.

The minimum required time for a probationary black belt is 16 weeks.
The black belt degrees are divided into three groups, the novice group (first to third degrees), the expert group (fourth and fifth degrees), and the master group (sixth to ninth degrees).
