Guide to Treadmills

Treadmill : What is it?

treadmill1

A treadmill is an indoor exercise and sporting equipment used for stationary walking, jogging, and running. It is ideal for burning calories, losing weight, developing strength, building muscles, and improving the overall condition of the body to prevent back pain, hypertension, and osteoporosis.

Treadmills are essentially large conveyor belts on which the user walks or runs. A flywheel or an electric motor drives the belt in a circular motion, allowing the user to walk or run without actually leaving his position. The speed of the belt and the intensity of the workout can be easily set according to the ability of the user. Working out with a medium-intensity treadmill normally burns 700 calories in an hour.

Kinds of Treadmills include the following:

Home treadmill

A home treadmill is intended for home use. It is ideal for extensive walking, running, and cross-training workouts. Good Home Treadmills feature durable rubber conveyor belts, ergonomically-designed handlebars, built-in computers, and screens that displays speed, time, distance, intensity, and heart rate information. Some models are foldable for easy storage in a closet or under the bed.

Commercial treadmill

A commercial treadmill is commonly used in the gym, health clinics, and hospitals. It uses a higher-powered motor that generates more horsepower than a home treadmill. It is bulky and rugged-looking, providing exceptional stability and durability.

Commercial Treadmills are ideal for extensive walking, running, and cross-training workouts. They usually feature durable rubber conveyor belts, ergonomically-designed handlebars, built-in computers, and screens that display speed, time, distance, intensity, and heart rate information.

Choosing Treadmills (Buying Tips)

Motor: Choose a treadmill with a motor that generates the right amount of power. If you intend to use it solely for walking, its horsepower should not be less than one and not more than one-and-a-half. If you intend to use it for extensive running, choose one with one-and-a-half to two horsepower.

Cushioning system: Look for a treadmill with an excellent cushioning system to prevent injuries on the back, knees, or ankles in case you slip or fall.

Belt speed: Make sure your treadmill has varying belt speeds. The average walking rate is three to six miles per hour (mph), while the average running rate is six to 10 mph. Choose a treadmill that can go up to 10 mph or more.
