Triathlon Bike : What is it?

triathlonbike1

The triathlon bike is a more aerodynamic variant of the road bicycle. Its special handlebars (called tri-bars or aero-bars), aerodynamic wheels, and other aerodynamic components reduce wind resistance.  The aero-bars have a smaller pair of horns that reach out to the sides. Its bars stretch forward from the neck of the bike (unlike regular curved drop bars seen in most road bicycles).  This design allows for elbow-rest cycling that makes the transition from cycling to running comfortable.

The triathlon bike is designed with a specialized “aggressive” geometry that includes an almost vertical steep seat-tube angle and a low neck relative to the saddle. This geometry lowers the triathletes' torsos to create a lower wind profile and preserves the muscles for the running portion. The triathlon bike can have a frame tube with a teardrop or an oval cross-section instead of a circular one. Its handlebars are flat instead of round, and its wheels usually have fewer spokes.

Triathlon bikes help strengthen and condition the muscles. They features a higher cadence or revolutions per minute that keeps the muscles loose and flexible for running.

Kinds of Triathlon Bikes include the following:

Aluminum frame triathlon bikes

A triathlon bike with a stiff aluminum frame is ideal for sprinting, cornering, and short rides.  It is also ideal for heavy riders who can handle a lightweight frame on bad roads.

Steel Frame Triathlon Bikes

A triathlon bike with a steel frame is heavier than an aluminum one. It is comfortable and durable. It has better shock-absorption for long distance biking.

Carbon Fiber Frame Triathlon Bikes

A triathlon bike with a carbon fiber frame offers optimal shock absorbency.  It is preferred by athletes who need to bike long distances.

Titanium Frame Triathlon Bikes

A triathlon bicycle with a titanium frame is stiff, lightweight, and durable. It offers a smooth ride on bad roads.  It is versatile, and is often called the ‘all-purpose triathlon bike.

Choosing Triathlon Bikes (Buying Tips)

Extra features. Comfort is very important in a triathlon bike. Choose one with a lowered top and proportional head tube with elbow pads on the aero bars for maximum comfort.
