Vacuum Sealer : What is it?

vacuumsealer1

A vacuum sealer is great not only for sealing sandwich bags, but also for removing oxygen from them. Vacuum sealers extend the shelf life of food products, eliminate freezer burn and dehydration loss, keep moisture away from dry products, and keeps leftovers longer. Some of the common products and items that can be vacuum packed are meat, fish, chicken, dried fruits and vegetables, nuts, candy, grains, backpacking supplies, important papers and documents, and survival kits.

Kinds of Vacuum Sealers include the following:

External clamp vacuum sealers

External clamp vacuum sealers use clamps to seal the open end of pouches. Only special pouches can be used with it.
It has an external vacuum port for vacuuming containers such as canning jars.
It is ideal for home and commercial use.

Retractable nozzle vacuum sealers

A retractable nozzle vacuum sealer also uses a clamp to seal the pouches as it removes air, but it has an additional retractable snorkel or tube that pulls the air out of the pouches.
Retractable nozzle vacuum sealers do not require special pouches.

Chamber

A chamber vacuum sealer is mostly used in the food packaging industry.
It is a stainless steel box with a seal bar for sealing pouches.
The air is pulled out from the chamber during the vacuum process.
After a pouch is sealed, the air goes back to the chamber.
Chamber vacuum sealers are used with standard flat vacuum pouches.
They can also be used to seal liquid products into pouches.

Vacuum sealer for gusseted bags

Vacuum sealers for gusseted bags, also called ‘coffee bag sealers,’ allow top and bottom sealing.
They provide airtight seals even with the toughest material.
They are used for sealing not just gusseted bags but also micro-layered bags.

Choosing Vacuum Sealers (Buying Tips)

Pillow pack:  For versatility, choose a vacuum sealer with a “pillow pack” option that removes air completely but leaves the pouch “inflated” to keep the contacts intact. This is done by injecting inert gases such as carbon dioxide or nitrogen into the pouch.
