Weight plates are usually made of steel, cast iron, or other heavy-duty metal. Some newer models are encased in rubber for better grip and to protect the gym floors from scratches and dents, which can occur when the user drops or sets the loaded barbell on the floor.
Standard Weight Plates are usually made of bare or plastic-coated cast iron. They come in standard weights of two and a half, five, ten, 25, and 50 pounds. They have one-inch center holes designed to fit into standard six-foot barbells. They are commonly used in personal and home gyms.
Olympic
Olympic Weight Plates are used in most professional weightlifting competitions. Standard weights are two and a half, five, ten, 25, 35, and 45 pounds. They have two-inch center holes that fit into sever-foot Olympic barbells.
Protective coatings: Many weight plates come with plastic or rubber coatings to protect the plate's edges and prevent it from damaging the floor. However, plastic plates tend to be less durable and come off in chunks, which makes the weights inaccurate. The plastic can also loosen over time and shift over the plate with frequent use. Rubber-encased plates are much more durable and reliable.
Grip: Choose a weight plate that you can grip firmly while carrying. Look for one with hollowed sides that serve as handles, or or with textured or ribbed sides to keep the plate from slipping. If you have sweaty or clammy hands, a rubber-encased plate may be right for you.
