A windproof lighter is a refillable lighter that produces a continuous flame not easily blown out. It is a very convenient fire starter to use when the winds are high in outdoor activities such as sailing, boating, paddling, hunting, skiing, snowmobiling, mountaineering, camping, and hiking. It is usually included in an outdoor survival kit.
A windproof lighter combines piezoelectric ignition and windproof flame technology to withstand extreme weather conditions. The piezoelectric ignition technology is the same ignition used in stoves and outdoor grills that eliminates the need for flints that fail when wet. A windproof lighter produces an electric current when the lighter ignition button bends the piezoelectric crystal. A continuous flame is produced when the butane gas ignites upon contact with the superheated catalyzer coil element. The flame produced is almost invisible, with a high temperature of 800 to 1,000 degrees Celsius.
Kinds of Windproof Lighters include the following:
Aluminum
An aluminum windproof lighter is durable and does not break easily. However, some models are susceptible to corrosion.
Polycarbonate plastic
A polycarbonate plastic windproof lighter is lightweight and easy to carry. However, it is susceptible to breaking when it falls and hits a sharp object.
